Westerly receives $700,000 in grants to continue its Sandy storm cleanup

Westerly - The town has announced that it has received two federal grants totaling more than $700,000 to continue the cleanup from Hurricane Sandy.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant Program awarded a grant of $677,862 to elevate eight residential properties in Misquamicut between and 1 and 3 feet above base flood elevation. Combined with a required match of $225,954 from the property owners, there is $903,816 for the work.

"This award is very important to Westerly and the State of Rhode Island as it provides funding for long-term recovery projects, that will assist in protection and preventative measures against flooding," said Rhode Island Emergency Management Executive Director Jamia McDonald.

The was also awarded $42,075 in federal funding from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Emergency Watershed Protection Program to clean up the hazardous vegetative debris in the Pawcatuck River. The town has to provide $12,750 in local matching funds.

"This new wave of federal grant funding will help homeowners impacted by Sandy and make our community more resilient over the long term," added U.S. Sen. Jack Reed.
