U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced on Thursday that nearly one year after Sandy battered the state's coastline, Rhode Island will receive an additional $6 million in federal aid for restoration projects and to prepare for future storms.

That brings to $10.5 million the amount of money that the Department of Interior has provided to Rhode Island after Sandy. The extra $6 million is part of $162 million that the Interior Department is allocating for 45 restoration projects along the East Coast.

After Sandy, Reed, the chairman of the Appropriations Committee on Interior and Environment, brought top U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials to badly damaged Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. Federal funding helped reopen the refuge.

"It's been a year since the storm hit and while we've made real progress, we've got to keep at it. Recovery from the storm is still a priority and more Sandy relief for Rhode Island should be coming down the road," Reed said in a statement.
