PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island will get more than $20 million in federal funding to help low-income households pay their energy bills this winter.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed's office announced the funding Monday. The funds are part of the $2.9 billion initiative known as the Low Income Energy Assistance Program.

Reed says about 34,000 Rhode Island households use the subsidies to pay their energy bills.

Individuals interested in applying for winter heating aid can contact the state's Office of Energy Resources or their city or town's local community action program office. Eligibility for the program is based on household income.

Last year the state received $22 million in winter heating aid. The funding was reduced for this year following spending cuts in Washington.
