PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island's senior U.S. senator, Jack Reed, on Saturday hailed the announcement by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel that about 90 percent of the civilian work force would be called back.

"It's good news for the workers, particularly for our civilian Defense Department workers at Newport," Reed said in a telephone interview. "That's a significant number of workers."

Reed said it is too soon to tell how many of the 800 people who were furloughed at Naval Station Newport will be able to return to work.

Each individual's job must be evaluated to see whether it contributes to the morale, well-being, capabilities and readiness of uniformed service members in order for the employee to return to work.
