Rhode Island is in line to receive $18.4 million in federal funds for clean water projects, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced Thursday.

Reed said the money, included in the 2014 Omnibus Appropriations bill, reflected his efforts to fight proposed cuts to the State Revolving Fund program. The Republican-controlled House had sought to provide only $600 million while President Obama had proposed $1.9 billion.

Reed said the funding will provide $9.5 million for a wastewater revolving fund and $8.9 million for a drinking water revolving fund, both of which are managed by the Rhode Island Clean Water Finance Agency.

"Clean water is essential for public health and our economy, and I worked hard to ensure Rhode Island got the best deal we could get. The federal government needs to be a reliable partner when it comes to maintaining healthy, safe water in our communities, and I am proud to have secured this vital funding to help put Rhode Islanders to work modernizing our water infrastructure, reducing pollution and protecting public health," Reed said in a statement.
